A lot of new players in D&D will fall into the routine of simply declaring your characters actions, i.e. - "I check for traps!" or "I roll for Investigation."

In combat, every turn matters—and so does how you use it.
Each round, on your turn, you can take one Action, one Bonus Action (if available), and move up to your speed. Most players know the classic choices like Attack, Dash, and Magic, but the 2024 ruleset gives you a full toolkit of Actions you might not be using to their full potential!
Here’s a quick breakdown of your Action options:
Attack – Strike with a weapon or unarmed strike.
Dash – Move again up to your speed—great for closing gaps or getting away.
Disengage – Avoid opportunity attacks as you move.
Dodge – Make yourself harder to hit and better at Dex saves.
Help – Give an ally advantage on a check or attack roll, or lend a hand in combat.
Hide – Try to disappear, especially useful for rogues or sneaky types.
Influence – Try to sway someone using Charisma or Wisdom-based skills.
Magic – Cast a spell or use a magic item or ability.
Ready – Prepare a reaction based on a trigger you define.
Search – Look for something hidden using Wisdom-based skills.
Study – Examine your surroundings using Intelligence-based knowledge.
Utilize – Use a nonmagical object—pull a lever, open a chest, etc.
Whether you're darting across the battlefield, helping a friend land the perfect hit, or preparing to ambush a charging enemy—your Action choice can shape the flow of combat.
Next time you're in a fight, think beyond "I attack!" There’s a whole world of tactical options at your fingertips.
